Reclamation's Safety of Dams program includes a periodic technical analysis of the condition of all of its dams to ensure that they do not present an unacceptable risk to the downstream population.

The Bureau of Reclamation conducted investigations of the Nelson Dikes outlet works from February 27 through March 11, 2006. Malta Irrigation District assisted with the investigations.

No significant change in the condition of the outlet conduits was observed when compared to data collected during inspections in 1999 and 2000. The storage level in the reservoir can be increased this spring as soon as water is able to be transported to the reservoir through the Dodson South Canal and the Nelson Feeder Canal. The reservoir may be filled to the top of the conservation pool during this irrigation season.

Nelson Dikes are located about 19 miles northeast of Malta and are operated and maintained by the Malta Irrigation District. Nelson Dikes were constructed by Reclamation in 1914 and 1915 and were enlarged in 1921 and 1922.
