Media Contact: John Redding, (208) 378-5212, jredding@pn.usbr.gov

For Release: August 18, 2004

The Bureau of Reclamation and Bonneville Power Administration will participate in a media day tour of Boise Diversion Dam to outline the restoration and rehabilitation of the historic powerhouse.

WHO: Administration representatives, John Keys, Reclamation Commissioner; Steve Hickok, BPA Deputy Administrator; Scott Coe, Vice President Generation Supply; Mark Jones, Vice President Federal Hydropower Project; and Jerrold Gregg, Reclamation Snake River Area Office Manager will offer very brief opening remarks.

WHAT: Media tour of historic Boise Diversion Dam and Powerhouse.

WHEN: Monday, August 23. 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

WHERE: Boise Diversion Dam located off State Highway 21, about 7 miles southeast of Boise, and adjacent to the Greenbelt.

WHY: Beginning in June 2001, Reclamation crews gutted the turbines and generators and began work to replace the aging units with state-of-the art hydro-generation works. The generators and major components of the turbines were replaced.

BPA funded the powerplant upgrade shortly after the nationwide hydroelectricity price surge in 2000. The power plant's three new generators are able to produce a combined maximum generation of over 3.4 megawatts, enough power for approximately 2,500 homes.

Due to security reasons, Boise Diversion Dam and Powerplant are not open for public tours; Reclamation is working with the Idaho Historical Museum to create an exhibit to outline its past construction and present- day technology. The exhibit should be available to the public in October.
