Albuquerque, N.M. — The Bureau of Reclamation, along with its partners, the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission and the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, is welcoming public comments on a proposed river maintenance project in the Los Lunas subreach of the Rio Grande between river miles 164 and 162, about two miles north of the New Mexico 6 bridge.
The purpose of the project is to improve water conveyance through the Los Lunas subreach by lowering five vegetated sandbars within the previously open river channel, thereby increasing the width of the river both on the west and east banks. Reclamation is inviting public comments on the Environmental Assessment document as part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for this project.
The EA can be found online at usbr.gov/uc/DocLibrary/EnvironmentalAssessments/20241118-LosLunasRiverMile163Rive MaintenanceProject-DraftEA-508-AAO.pdf and will be open for public comments until Dec. 13, 2024.
For more information on the project, contact the Project Manager, Jancoba Dorley, at (505) 462-3584 or jdorley@usbr.gov.
