The 32nd annual event brings people from 6 countries to learn about dam safety and operations through classroom discussions and facility tours
DENVER – For the last two weeks, engineers from throughout the world have been meeting with Reclamation staff at the 32nd annual Safety Evaluation of Existing Dams International Technical Seminar and Study Tour.
"Reclamation values the opportunity to share dam safety knowledge and experience and provide guidance for attendees interested in learning more about dam safety, said Senior International Affairs Specialist Angela Medina. "In addition, Reclamation gains a lot also from the mutual knowledge, ideas and discussions that occur during the two weeks."
During the first week of the seminar, attendees participated in technical sessions led by experienced Reclamation engineers and geologists. These sessions consisted of case histories and structured discussions covering all aspects of a safety evaluations program. Topics included hydrologic, seismic, geotechnical, electrical, mechanical and structural considerations of dam safety as well as operation, maintenance, surveillance, and emergency preparedness.
The second week, participants made site visits to Flaming Gorge Dam and AV Watkins Dam in Utah. At Echo Dam, also in Utah, participants were led by Reclamation staff in an abbreviated simulated dam examination. The seminar concluded with a technical tour of Hoover Dam.
The objectives of the International SEED Seminar are to provide an overview of the institutional and technical requirements of a successful dam safety, operation and maintenance program; provide a model for establishing or improving a dam safety program; increase the technical capabilities of those responsible for dam safety; and present procedures and demonstrations, through site visits, for conducting dam safety examinations and evaluations.
Reclamation has hosted this seminar since 1989 with participation of more than 1000 technical staff from 74 countries. To learn more about this or other seminars and technical workshops hosted by Reclamation's International Affairs Office, please visit https://www.usbr.gov/international/.
