Walnut Grove, Calif. – The Bureau of Reclamation today announced that the Delta Cross Channel gates will open for the summer season at about 10 a.m. Friday, June 23.

The Delta Cross Channel Gates control the diversion channel on the Sacramento River near Walnut Grove, about 30 miles south of Sacramento. When the gates are open, fresh water is drawn from the Sacramento River into the interior of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta through Snodgrass Slough and the Mokelumne River. The open gates also allow boat traffic to pass.

Reclamation closes the Delta Cross Channel Gates during high flow periods on the Sacramento River to prevent flood conditions in the San Joaquin section of the Delta and to protect migrating salmon.

Boaters are advised to check the status of the gates. The gates may open or close on short notice based on requirements. The closing and opening of the gates take about one hour. Updates on gate openings and closures are available at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/cvo/vungvari/dcc_chng.pdf.
