HELENA, Mont. – The Canyon Ferry Reservoir public comment period is now open and will continue through June 8. Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA) allows federal agencies to collect and retain user fees for overnight camping, group use shelters, and special use permits. If FLREA is instituted, existing fees from users of reservoir facilities will stay at Canyon Ferry and be used exclusively for local improvements instead of returning the fees to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
Reclamation’s Montana Area Office plans to initiate FLREA at Canyon Ferry Reservoir in 2022 to be able to retain existing fees for operations and maintenance and improve and develop additional recreation facilities around the reservoir. The current fees for campgrounds and group use shelters at Canyon Ferry will not be increased, and no additional fees will be added.
“This is a great opportunity to improve facilities and bolster recreational activities at Canyon Ferry Reservoir,” said Ryan Newman, Montana Area Manager. “Keeping funds local will be a great benefit to Montanans and other visitors to the reservoir.”
Comment period for FLREA implementation is open and will continue through June 8, 2022. The Federal Register Notice can be found at https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/12/10/2021-26763/notice-to-establish-a-new-federal-lands-recreation-enhancement-act-site-at-canyon-ferry-reservoir.
