Salmon Monitoring Team
The Salmon Monitoring Team is a technical advisory team that provides information to the Water Operations Management Team (WOMT), Reclamation, and California Department of Water Resources to reduce adverse effects of Delta operations of the Central Valley Project (CVP) and State Water Project (SWP) to salmonids and green sturgeon.
The Salmon Monitoring group is comprised of biologists, hydrologists, and other staff with relevant expertise from the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation), California Department of Water Resources (DWR), California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), U.S. Fish and Wildlife (USFWS), and NOAA Fisheries. The working group will have weekly phone conferences to discuss, review, and synthesize information related to project operations and fisheries issues.
The team will:
- Review and synthesize information on species abundance, species distribution, life stage transitions, and relevant physical parameters to inform real-time management of Delta operations;
- Review annually project operations in the Delta and the collected data from ongoing monitoring programs;
- Track the implementation of the Delta Performance Objectives, OMR Management, and DCC gate operations described in the 2019 Final Biological Assessment for Reinitiation of Consultation on the Long-Term Operation of the Central Valley Project and State Water Project;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the Delta Performance Objectives, OMR Management, and DCC gate operations in reducing mortality or impairment of essential behaviors of listed species in the Delta; and
- Coordinate with the Smelt Monitoring Team to maximize benefits to all listed species.
The Salmon Monitoring Team provides annual written reports to Reclamation, DWR, and NOAA Fisheries, including a summary of major actions taken during the year to implement Delta OMR Management Actions as well as salvage and loss of listed fish, an evaluation of their effectiveness, and recommendations for future actions. The Salmon Monitoring group also provides a coordinating function for the other technical working groups, to assure that relevant information from all technical groups is considered for actions to implement RPMs related to Delta Operations.
